Santri Embracing the Future: From Pesantren Traditions to the Digital Age

By: Dr. Abdul Wadud Nafis, Lc., M.E.I.

Pesantren, or Islamic boarding schools, are one of the essential pillars in the development of Islamic civilization in Indonesia. These institutions have nurtured generations who not only deepen their religious knowledge but also cultivate moral character, independence, discipline, and social responsibility. However, as the world enters the digital age, characterized by artificial intelligence, social media, and advances in information technology, santri—students of Islamic boarding schools—face a new challenge: how to preserve their scholarly traditions while responding to the demands of the times.

Santri must not become trapped in romanticizing the past, nor should they lose touch with their traditional roots. Classical Islamic texts, scholarly chains of transmission (sanad), respect for teachers, and moral development are invaluable legacies that must be preserved. Technology may change, but honesty, proper conduct, responsibility, and wisdom must remain the foundations of a santri’s life.

At the same time, mastering digital technology is no longer merely an option; it has become a necessity. Santri need to develop digital literacy, critical-thinking abilities, communication skills, and an understanding of artificial intelligence. With these competencies, they can harness technology to expand Islamic outreach (dakwah), advance Islamic education, establish digital-based businesses, and disseminate knowledge that benefits society.

Pesantren must also undergo transformation. Learning can be enriched through digital libraries, online classes, interactive learning platforms, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence. However, this transformation does not mean replacing the role of kiai (Islamic religious scholars) and teachers. Technology is merely a tool, while character formation, deep understanding, and moral guidance still require human mentorship.

The greatest challenge of the digital age is not simply limited access to technology, but the ability to filter information and maintain integrity. The overwhelming flow of information can facilitate the spread of hoaxes, hate speech, and superficial understandings of religion. Therefore, santri must become a calming and constructive presence in digital spaces, communicating a moderate, courteous, and enlightening understanding of Islam grounded in knowledge that can withstand scrutiny.

Furthermore, santri must have the courage to take an active role in the fields of economics, education, social development, and innovation. They must do more than merely observe change; they must become agents who create solutions. The combination of deep religious knowledge, technological competence, an entrepreneurial spirit, and social responsibility can make santri a strategic force in Indonesia’s development.

Ultimately, the future of pesantren depends on their ability to preserve their heritage while fostering innovation. The ideal santri are neither those who reject technology nor those who follow it without restraint, but rather a generation capable of mastering it through faith, knowledge, and noble character.

Santri must move toward the future without abandoning their traditional roots. Tradition provides direction, technology opens opportunities, and moral character determines the true value of their endeavors.
