However, amidst globalization and economic challenges, pesantren must develop innovative and sustainable economic empowerment strategies.
Economic empowerment in pesantren carries strategic significance in two key dimensions. First, it strengthens their financial independence, reducing reliance on donations or external funding. Second, it serves as a tool to empower students (santri) and surrounding communities with skills, economic access, and entrepreneurial opportunities. Thus, pesantren can become centers for community empowerment that actively contribute to an economy rooted in Islamic values.
Through systematic approaches, economic empowerment in pesantren can be achieved by developing business units, integrating entrepreneurship into the curriculum, utilizing technology, managing productive waqf (endowments), and establishing a sharia-compliant economic ecosystem. These strategies are designed not only to ensure the sustainability of pesantren but also to create positive social impacts on their communities.
This paper aims to comprehensively discuss various strategies that pesantren can implement to achieve economic empowerment. It is hoped that these insights will help pesantren address contemporary challenges while becoming inspirational agents of change for society.
A. Definition of Economic Empowerment for Islamic Boarding Schools
Economic empowerment for Islamic boarding schools refers to strategic efforts to enhance their financial independence by managing and developing economic activities based on their internal potential and the needs of surrounding communities. This includes establishing business units, utilizing pesantren resources like waqf land, leveraging students’ skills and alumni networks, and collaborating with external parties such as governments, Islamic financial institutions, and private sectors.
B. Objectives of Economic Empowerment for Islamic Boarding Schools
The primary objectives of pesantren economic empowerment are:
- Financial Independence: Reduce dependency on donations by creating independent sources of income.
- Student Empowerment: Equip students with entrepreneurial and economic skills to compete in the job market or become entrepreneurs after graduation.
