Indonesia is currently preparing to welcome the Golden Indonesia 2045 era, marking a century of independence and envisioned as a milestone of national greatness. To achieve this vision, the country needs a young generation that is not only intellectually capable but also spiritually strong, morally upright, and equipped with firm leadership character. In this context, Islamic boarding schools—or pondok pesantren—serve as one of the oldest and most strategic educational institutions in shaping such a generation.
As educational institutions grounded in Islamic values, pesantren are unique in their holistic approach to educating students (santri), encompassing intellect, emotion, and behavior. Beyond religious knowledge, santri are trained to live independently, think critically, and exhibit strong social concern. By combining traditional religious curriculum (diniyah) with modern subjects and character-building approaches, pesantren have proven their ability to produce outstanding individuals ready to drive the nation’s progress.
So, what strategies do pesantren employ to shape this golden generation? Here is a systematic explanation:
- 1. Strengthening Religious and Character Education
Pesantren instill Islamic values as the main foundation for character development. Through the study of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning), moral education, and role-modeling by kyai (Islamic scholars) and ustadz (teachers), students are nurtured to possess integrity, honesty, responsibility, and noble character (akhlakul karimah). This education goes beyond theory—it is practiced in daily life, shaping resilient and morally upright individuals.
- 2. Integrating Religious and General Curricula
To prepare students for global challenges, many pesantren integrate religious (diniyah) curriculum with the national education curriculum. In addition to learning Islamic sciences such as tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and hadith (Prophetic traditions), students are also taught general subjects like mathematics, science, and English. This integration nurtures santri who are not only religious but also intellectually competent across disciplines.
- 3. Promoting Literacy and Digitalization
In the digital era, pesantren are actively developing students’ digital literacy. Santri are encouraged to become tech-savvy through training in computers, social media, coding, and graphic design. Moreover, reading, writing, and numeracy skills are reinforced to cultivate critical and creative thinking. These efforts ensure that pesantren graduates are not left behind in the fast-paced technological landscape.
- 4. Fostering Entrepreneurship and Independence
Many pesantren equip students with life skills through hands-on entrepreneurship programs such as agriculture, animal husbandry, trade, and small business management. The goal is to create financially independent individuals with ethical entrepreneurial spirit and a focus on social benefit.
- 5. Cultivating Leadership and Nationalism
Pesantren provide leadership training through student organizations, leadership camps, and community service. Santri are also taught the values of nationalism, tolerance, and patriotism to prepare them as future leaders who uphold Pancasila and the unity of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).
- 6. Developing Individual Talents and Potential
Each santri has unique potential. Pesantren encourage this through extracurricular activities such as calligraphy, public speaking in Arabic and English, sports, and traditional arts. These activities help students discover and grow their talents to contribute according to their individual strengths.
- 7. Strengthening Mental and Spiritual Resilience
The core strength of pesantren lies in deep spiritual cultivation. Through activities like congregational prayer, night prayer (qiyamul lail), voluntary fasting, remembrance (dzikir), and studies in Sufism, students are trained to develop mental and emotional resilience. This is essential to withstand the pressures and temptations of modern life.
Conclusion
With these strategies, pesantren play a vital role in producing a golden generation that excels in spirituality, knowledge, skills, and leadership. This is the generation that will serve as the foundation for Indonesia’s success in 2045.
