They are not only places for studying Islamic knowledge, but also institutions recognized for shaping the character and morality of students (santri). Life in a pesantren, filled with discipline, simplicity, and struggle, provides many valuable lessons and wisdom for the future lives of the students. Struggling in a pesantren is not easy. Students must be willing to leave the comfort of their homes, live far away from their families, and adapt to a simple way of life.
