Abstract
This article examines the concept of pesantren economic development as a strategic effort to foster pesantren self-sufficiency and improve the welfare of students (santri) and surrounding communities. As Islamic educational institutions, pesantren possess significant economic potential when supported by proper management. This article proposes a holistic approach encompassing entrepreneurship education, the development of pesantren business units, economic digitalization, strategic partnerships, and human resource empowerment. By integrating Islamic values with modern economic principles, pesantren are expected to become sustainable drivers of the Muslim community’s economy.

A. Introduction

Pesantren have long been centers of Islamic education and da’wah in Indonesia. However, in terms of economic development, their potential has not been fully optimized. Many pesantren still rely on external assistance and lack strong economic independence. Therefore, an economic development model is needed that is not only based on the potential of pesantren but also aligned with the Islamic values that underlie their foundation. The economic development of pesantren is essential amid the demands of globalization and the challenges of social-economic inequality. Pesantren are expected not only to educate santri in religious matters but also to equip them with broader life skills, including economic competencies.

B. Theoretical and Philosophical Foundations

Islamic economic concepts emphasize the importance of justice, blessings (barakah), and the balance between spiritual and material aspects. Pesantren values such as humility (tawadhu), trustworthiness (amanah), brotherhood (ukhuwah), and independence are strong social capital for building an inclusive and just economic system. These principles align with community-based development theories that stress active participation, local empowerment, and sustainability. This approach rejects exploitation and inequality often born from capitalist economic systems. As institutions rooted in values and tradition, pesantren hold a strategic position in realizing Islamic economics in tangible and practical forms.

C. Pesantren Economic Profile

Most pesantren possess assets such as land, student labor, and extensive alumni networks. These can be optimized through structured economic planning. Some pesantren have successfully developed business units such as pesantren shops, livestock farming, agriculture, and service businesses. However, many still face serious challenges such as limited professional management, low financial literacy, and restricted access to capital. SWOT analysis shows pesantren’s main strengths lie in mass support and strong spiritual values, while their weaknesses are found in managerial, technological, and innovation aspects. Opportunities are wide open in the digital era and the rise of the sharia economy, while threats include free market competition and lack of policy support.

D. Pillars of Pesantren Economic Development

1. Entrepreneurship Education and Training: Santri need to be equipped with practical and contextual entrepreneurial skills. The pesantren curriculum can be integrated with entrepreneurship programs, digital marketing training, business management, and agricultural or halal product processing.

2. Development of Pesantren Business Units (UUP): Pesantren can establish cooperatives, pesantren shops, livestock farms, agricultural projects, halal food production units, book publishing, and service businesses such as sharia-based laundry and transportation. These units serve as income sources and practical training grounds for santri.

3. Digitalization and Information Technology: Utilizing IT and digital platforms is a solution to expand markets and improve management efficiency. E-commerce, social media, and sharia-compliant financial apps should be part of pesantren’s economic strategies.

4. Strategic Partnerships: Collaborations with government, private sector, NGOs, and alumni are vital in strengthening pesantren’s economic power. Partnerships can involve funding, training, product distribution, promotion, and market network enhancement.

5. Strengthening Management and Human Resources: The economic management of pesantren must be supported by professional and competent human resources. Intensive training is needed for business unit managers, including in accounting, leadership, and risk management.

E. Implementation Strategies

The economic development strategy of pesantren starts with mapping local potentials and needs through participatory research and stakeholder dialogue. This is followed by the formulation of a community-based business plan. The pesantren’s economic organization should be systematically arranged through the establishment of Pesantren-Owned Enterprises (BUMPes), managed professionally. Regular monitoring and evaluation should be carried out with expert involvement and active participation from the pesantren community to ensure program sustainability.

F. Pesantren Business Models

Pesantren may adopt various business models such as BUMPes, productive waqf, and santri business incubators. BUMPes functions as a professional and transparent management entity for business units. Productive waqf can be used to develop productive assets such as plantations, stores, or commercial land. Santri business incubators serve as nurturing platforms for young entrepreneurs based on Islamic values, offering business mentoring, seed capital, and distribution networks. A combination of these models can strengthen the resilience and sustainability of pesantren economics.

G Expected Impact

Pesantren economic development is expected to foster financial independence, improve student welfare, and empower surrounding communities. Furthermore, pesantren can become centers of the people’s economy that integrate spiritual values into daily economic activities. Pesantren will also play an important role in the national economic system through their contributions to job creation, poverty alleviation, and promoting social justice grounded in religious values.

H. Conclusion

Pesantren hold great potential to build a just and independent Muslim economy. With the right strategy rooted in Islamic values, pesantren economic development can become an applicable and sustainable empowerment model. Synergy among stakeholders is essential to realize pesantren as a strategic economic force for the nation. In the future, pesantren economic development must become an integral part of the national agenda to build an economically sovereign and spiritually grounded Indonesia.
