THE PROFOUND SECRET OF SALAWAT

From the Vibration of the Tongue to the Light of Life

By Dr. Abdul Wadud Nafis, Lc., MEI

Salawat is one of the most noble acts of worship in the life of a Muslim. It may appear simple because it consists merely of words uttered by the tongue, yet behind its simplicity lies a profound spiritual value. Salawat is an expression of love, reverence, and prayer for the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. When a Muslim makes it a habit to send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, he is, in essence, connecting himself with a noble figure who serves as the ultimate example in life. From the vibration of the tongue, it is hoped that tranquility of the heart, love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the motivation to live with better character will emerge.

Allah Almighty has honored the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ by commanding the believers to invoke blessings and peace upon him. In Qur’an, Surah Al-Ahzab, verse 56, it is stated that Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. This verse demonstrates the exalted status of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and at the same time encourages Muslims to increase their recitation of salawat. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also explained that whoever sends blessings upon him once will receive ten blessings from Allah in return. This virtue demonstrates the immense value of an act that appears simple outwardly but holds a magnificent position in the sight of Allah Almighty.

The first secret of salawat lies in its ability to nurture love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Love does not grow without frequently remembering the one who is loved. When the name of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is repeatedly mentioned with reverence, the heart gradually becomes closer to his noble character and personality. From this love emerges the desire to learn about his life, understand his Sunnah, study his character, and follow his example. Thus, salawat is not merely an activity of the tongue; it is a gateway to spiritual education and the formation of a noble personality.

The second secret is that salawat can become a means of calming the heart. Human life can never be completely separated from problems, anxiety, pressure, and uncertainty. In such circumstances, a Muslim needs remembrance of Allah that restores the awareness that life remains under the power and decree of Allah Almighty. Reciting salawat with deep reflection can provide a moment to pause from worldly busyness, calm the mind, and renew one’s love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Such tranquility does not necessarily mean that all problems immediately disappear; rather, the heart becomes better prepared to face difficulties with patience and trust in Allah.

The third secret is that salawat can transform the habitual use of the tongue into a source of goodness. The human tongue can become a source of reward, but it can also become a source of sin. Harsh words, slander, backbiting, and hurtful speech can damage relationships and wound hearts. Conversely, a tongue accustomed to reciting salawat becomes increasingly trained to utter words of goodness. Therefore, increasing one’s recitation of salawat should be accompanied by an effort to guard one’s speech. The practice of someone who frequently recites salawat cannot be considered complete if he continues to hurt others through his words.

However, the profound power of salawat should not be understood merely in terms of the number of times it is recited. More important are the sincerity of the heart, reverence for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the transformation of one’s behavior after reciting salawat. Salawat should not become merely a routine performed without reflection. Whenever the name of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is mentioned, it should awaken the awareness that he is an exemplary figure whom Muslims are called to love and follow. In this way, salawat becomes a bridge connecting words, the heart, and actions.

The proper etiquette of reciting salawat must also be observed. A Muslim should recite salawat with a sincere intention, deep reverence, and beliefs that remain consistent with the principle of tawhid—the oneness of Allah. Love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ should bring a person closer to Allah Almighty, not lead him away from Him. Furthermore, reciting salawat should be accompanied by an effort to study the Sunnah and the noble character of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The most meaningful proof of love is not merely mentioning someone’s name frequently, but striving to follow the way of life and the values of goodness that he taught.

Ultimately, the greatest secret of salawat lies not merely in the vibration of the sound that emerges from the tongue, but in the light that is hoped to grow within the heart. A tongue that recites salawat can awaken the heart; a heart that loves the Messenger of Allah ﷺ can inspire good conduct; and good conduct can bring benefit to life. Therefore, let salawat become a part of everyday life: when beginning an activity, when experiencing happiness, when facing difficulties, and whenever the heart needs tranquility.

Salawat is a simple expression of love, yet it can become a path toward profound transformation. The more sincerely the tongue recites salawat, the stronger one’s love for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ becomes; and the stronger that love becomes, the greater the desire to emulate his noble character. From there, the vibration of the tongue can transform into the light of life—illuminating the heart, beautifying one’s character, calming the soul, and guiding humanity ever closer to Allah Almighty.
