Pesantren, as the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, must undergo transformation and adaptation to remain relevant, modern, and competitive. Although rooted in tradition, pesantren possess a historical flexibility that enables them to keep pace with changing times. Therefore, AI can serve as a strategic opportunity to strengthen Islamic education.

2.1 Challenges Faced by Pesantren in the AI Era
Several major challenges faced by pesantren include:
- Limited digital literacy among students and educators.
- Changes in learning culture that are increasingly influenced by technology.
- The risk of technological dependence without adequate understanding of digital ethics.
- Digital infrastructure gaps among pesantren.
2.2 Opportunities for AI Utilization in Pesantren
AI can be used for:
- Improving the quality of learning through intelligent digital platforms.
- Enhancing the efficiency of pesantren administration.

Pesantren need to incorporate digital literacy, cybersecurity, and introductory AI materials into their curriculum to equip students with the skills needed to compete in the digital era.

Traditional methods such as sorogan, bandongan, and halaqah can be combined with video-based learning, digital modules, and e-learning platforms to create a more engaging and efficient learning process.

High-speed internet access, computers, multimedia rooms, and cybersecurity systems need to be gradually developed so that pesantren are fully prepared for the digital era.

5.1 Preserving the Scholarly Authority of Pesantren
AI must not replace the roles of teachers, kiai, and spiritual guidance. Technology should serve only as a supportive tool.

The transformation and adaptation of pesantren in the era of Artificial Intelligence is an urgent necessity. Pesantren need to integrate technology into their curriculum, management, and da’wah strategies, while simultaneously strengthening ethical and moral values. With appropriate approaches, pesantren can evolve into modern Islamic educational institutions that are excellent and capable of contributing significantly to the development of competitive Muslim generations at the global level.
