The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought significant changes to various aspects of human life, including the education sector. Pesantren, as the oldest Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, must undergo transformation and adaptation to remain relevant, modern, and competitive. Although rooted in tradition, pesantren possess a historical flexibility that enables them to keep pace with changing times. Therefore, AI can serve as a strategic opportunity to strengthen Islamic education.

2. AI as a Challenge and Opportunity for Pesantren

2.1 Challenges Faced by Pesantren in the AI Era

Several major challenges faced by pesantren include:

1. Limited digital literacy among students and educators.
2. Changes in learning culture that are increasingly influenced by technology.
3. The risk of technological dependence without adequate understanding of digital ethics.
4. Digital infrastructure gaps among pesantren.

2.2 Opportunities for AI Utilization in Pesantren

AI can be used for:

1. Improving the quality of learning through intelligent digital platforms.
2. Enhancing the efficiency of pesantren administration.
3. Expanding digital Islamic literacy and da’wah.
4. Strengthening scientific research through the digitalization of classical Islamic texts.
5. Transformation of Pesantren Learning Systems

3.1 Integration of Digital Curriculum

Pesantren need to incorporate digital literacy, cybersecurity, and introductory AI materials into their curriculum to equip students with the skills needed to compete in the digital era.

3.2 Hybrid Learning Models

Traditional methods such as sorogan, bandongan, and halaqah can be combined with video-based learning, digital modules, and e-learning platforms to create a more engaging and efficient learning process.

3.3 Utilization of AI to Enhance Learning

AI can be used to:

1. Develop personalized learning recommendations.
2. Strengthen Arabic language learning through NLP-based applications.
3. Archive classical texts using OCR and automated text analysis.
4. Build automated evaluation systems for student assignments.
5. Management Adaptation of Pesantren in the Technological Era

4.1 Digitalization of Pesantren Administration

Student administration, finance, attendance, and archiving can be managed through digital systems, enabling more transparent, faster, and more efficient operations.

4.2 Strengthening Human Resource Competence

Digital literacy training for kiai, teachers, and administrative staff is essential to ensure effective technological integration.

4.3 Development of Technological Infrastructure

High-speed internet access, computers, multimedia rooms, and cybersecurity systems need to be gradually developed so that pesantren are fully prepared for the digital era.

5. Ethical and Moral Challenges in AI Implementation

5.1 Preserving the Scholarly Authority of Pesantren

AI must not replace the roles of teachers, kiai, and spiritual guidance. Technology should serve only as a supportive tool.

5.2 Ethical Use of Technology

Students need to be equipped with awareness of digital ethics, data security, social media responsibility, and the productive use of technology.

6. Opportunities for Da’wah and Innovation in Pesantren

6.1 AI-Based Digital Da’wah

Pesantren can utilize technology to produce da’wah content, develop Islamic applications, and expand the reach of their religious teachings.

6.2 Development of Scientific Research

Digitalizing classical texts (kitab kuning), utilizing AI-based text analysis, and collaborating with research institutions offer great potential to enhance the scientific contributions of pesantren.

6.3 Empowering the Economic Potential of Students

AI opens business opportunities for students in areas such as digital design, content creation, online business, and technology-based educational services

7. Conclusion

The transformation and adaptation of pesantren in the era of Artificial Intelligence is an urgent necessity. Pesantren need to integrate technology into their curriculum, management, and da’wah strategies, while simultaneously strengthening ethical and moral values. With appropriate approaches, pesantren can evolve into modern Islamic educational institutions that are excellent and capable of contributing significantly to the development of competitive Muslim generations at the global level.
